How to Become a Dietitian

Members of the profession work in a wide variety of practice areas and are involved in the following activities:
  • Clinical dietetics:
    • Screen for nutrition risk and apply principles of medical nutrition therapy to maximize nutritional status and quality of life
    • Provide nutrition assessment, analysis of nutrient intake, nutrition education, development of nutrition care plans/goals, continuous evaluation of the quality, appropriateness and effectiveness of nutrition care
    • Services are provided to patient populations ranging from neonatal to geriatric in a range of settings including acute care (inpatients, outpatients), long term care, home care, and ambulatory care clinics (i.e. diabetes, cardiac)
    • Inpatients- provide supplementation, tube feeding, parenteral nutrition for patients with an inability to maintain nutritional status without augmentation due to trauma/disease or altered organ function needing nutritional manipulation (renal disease, liver disease)
    • Outpatients- improve knowledge/behaviors to reduce or delay health risks (high risk pregnancy, failure to thrive infants, chronic disease)

  • Community dietetics:
    • Health promotion, disease prevention
    • Provide consultation, information and education to professionals, agencies, personnel, and individuals within the community
    • Plan, implement and evaluate programs and policies to address nutrition needs across the lifecycle
    • Develop leading edge nutrition guidelines, tools and resources
    • Settings include community/public health centers, agencies such Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation

  • Public health
    • Public health policy (Health Canada, Alberta Health)
    • Nutrition labeling, food fortification, food security
    • Development of Canada’s Food Guide, Recommended Dietary Intakes, Position Statements

  • Food service management
    • Manage food preparation, food quality and distribution in large food service systems, catering and health institutions

  • Private Practice
    • Consult to individuals, groups, workplaces, institutions, Employee Assistance Programs, health and lifestyle centers
    • Media work

  • Food industry and marketing boards
    • Product development and marketing, regulatory affairs, consumer research and education, advertising, and media affairs
